ORIN Insights

Creating ORIN has taken us deep into the world of fine jewellery - from gold, gemstones and settings to craftsmanship, lab-grown diamonds and the details that influence what a piece ultimately costs.

Along the way, we learned things we hadn't always known as jewellery buyers ourselves.

ORIN Insights is where we share some of that knowledge. Not to tell you what to buy, but to help you understand what you're looking at, what you're paying for, and the details that can make one piece of fine jewellery very different from another.

01 - Solid Gold, Vermeil & Plated: What's the Difference?

Gold stud earrings and other fine jewellery can look remarkably similar at first glance while being very different underneath.

Solid gold means the gold runs throughout the piece. 14k gold, also described as 14ct gold in the UK, contains 58.5% pure gold combined with other metals to give it strength and durability. Unlike plated jewellery, it doesn't simply have a surface layer of gold that can gradually wear away.

Gold vermeil is sterling silver coated with a layer of gold. It can offer the look of gold at a lower price, but that outer layer can gradually wear with use.

Gold-plated jewellery has a layer of gold applied over another base metal. The thickness of that layer can vary considerably, which can affect how the piece wears over time.

None of these is automatically the right choice. They are different products at different price points. Knowing whether you're buying solid gold, gold vermeil or gold-plated jewellery helps you understand what sits behind the price - and what to expect from the piece over time.

02 - Karats: Why More Isn't Always Better?

When we started developing ORIN, one of the questions we explored was which gold purity made the most sense for stud earrings designed to be worn, changed and enjoyed regularly.

Gold purity is measured in karats (or carats in UK jewellery terminology). 24k gold is almost pure gold, 18k contains 75% gold, and 14k gold contains 58.5%. Higher purity means more gold, but it also means a softer metal.

For delicate fine jewellery and everyday earrings, there is a balance between gold content, strength and wearability. We chose 14k gold for ORIN because it gives us the combination we were looking for: real gold, durability and the strength needed for an interchangeable stud earring design.

So a higher karat number doesn't automatically mean one piece is better than another. How the jewellery is designed, constructed and intended to be worn matters too.

03 - The Details You Don't Always See.

Some of the most important decisions in fine jewellery are measured in millimetres - and sometimes they're barely visible at all.

The weight of the gold. The thickness of a setting. The length and placement of a post. The way a gemstone or diamond is held. The number and shape of the prongs. How an interchangeable element sits when the earring is actually being worn.

During ORIN's development, we learned how much these apparently small decisions can affect comfort, durability, proportion and the overall finish of stud earrings and other fine jewellery.

It's also why we became slightly obsessed with details.

On the ORIN Core, for example, we added a lab-grown diamond into the side of the basket. It isn't there to make the piece louder. It's simply a beautiful detail to discover - one of those small things that makes a piece feel considered from every angle.

04 - What Are You Actually Paying For?

Two pieces of fine jewellery can look similar in a photograph and have very different prices. There isn't one simple reason.

The price of gold stud earrings, gemstone earrings or diamond earrings can reflect the amount and purity of gold used, the stones, the complexity of the setting, craftsmanship, finishing, production quantities, design development and the costs involved in bringing a piece to market. Brand positioning can influence price too.

This is one of the things we found particularly interesting while developing ORIN: price alone doesn't tell you everything about a piece, and neither does appearance.

Looking at what a piece is actually made from - and how it has been constructed - gives you a much better basis for understanding its value.

That's why we want ORIN product pages to be specific about materials and construction rather than relying only on words such as "premium" or "luxury". We'd rather tell you what's there and let you decide what it's worth to you.

05 - Recycled Gold & Lab-Grown Stones: A More Considered Choice

Fine jewellery begins with its materials - and where those materials come from matters.

During the development of ORIN, we made a conscious decision to create our pieces using recycled 14k gold. Recycled gold is gold that is already in circulation, refined and reused to create new jewellery rather than relying on newly mined gold.

We took the same approach to our stones. The diamonds used in ORIN are lab-grown diamonds, and our coloured stones are lab-created rather than mined.

Lab-grown diamonds have the same chemical and physical properties as mined diamonds. The difference is their origin: they are created in controlled laboratory environments rather than extracted from the earth.

Choosing recycled gold and lab-grown stones doesn't mean creating jewellery has no environmental impact. Manufacturing still requires resources and energy. But these choices allow us to reduce our reliance on newly mined materials.

It was something we considered carefully when developing ORIN - and simply felt like a more considered way for us to create fine jewellery.

06 - What Are Interchangeable Earrings? One Core, More Possibilities

Jewellery has traditionally been designed as a finished piece: one earring, one design, one way to wear it.

Interchangeable earrings work differently.

Sometimes described as modular jewellery, interchangeable stud earrings are designed so that different elements can be added, removed or combined, allowing one piece of jewellery to create different looks.

It's an idea that became central to ORIN: could one pair of fine jewellery earrings do more?

The ORIN Core is the foundation - a 14k gold stud earring designed to be worn beautifully on its own. Different Expressions can then be added to transform the same Core, creating different combinations, from simple everyday earrings to something more elevated.

The idea isn't simply to own more jewellery. It's to find more possibilities in the jewellery you already own.

One Core. Many Expressions.

07 - Why Do We Keep Coming Back to the Same Colours?

Have you ever opened your wardrobe and noticed that, even as your style changes, you keep returning to the same colours? Perhaps it is a deep green, a soft peach or a shade of blue that always feels right. Over time, those colours can become part of your signature style.

When we began imagining ORIN, we noticed the same pattern in our jewellery. We called the shades we returned to our 'anchor colours', our own way of describing the colours that feel most like us.

To find yours, look at what you actually
wear and love, not just what catches your eye. Which colours make you feel
comfortable and confident?

That thinking inspired ORIN’s
interchangeable earrings. Choose a Core colour you connect with, wear your solid 14k gold stud earring alone, or add an Expression to change its look.
Your colour stays; your style can evolve.

08 - The Art of the Ear Stack: Do Earrings Have to Match?

Matching earrings are timeless, but
mismatched earrings can feel just as considered. A simple stud on one ear and a more expressive piece on the other creates balance without needing to look identical.

For an effortless ear stack, start with one focal point. Keep the other earrings simple so every detail has room to shine. Solid 14k gold stud earrings are an easy foundation for everyday styling,
whether you have one piercing or several.

Try wearing one ORIN Core alone and another with an Expression. Or wear two Cores together for a quieter look. With multiple piercings, let your Core take centre stage and build around it with smaller studs.

There are no strict rules: the best ear
stack is the one that feels like you. ORIN’s interchangeable stud earrings let
you experiment with different looks while keeping the Core you love.

09 - How to Choose Jewellery That Grows With You

When choosing fine jewellery, think beyond how a piece looks in a photograph. Can you imagine wearing it on an ordinary day, at work or out for dinner? The pieces you reach for most often usually fit naturally into your life.

Consider colour, scale and comfort, as well as the materials. Solid 14k gold differs from gold plating, and clear
information about stones and lab-grown diamonds helps you make a thoughtful
choice.

Versatility matters too. A pair of gold
stud earrings may be beautifully simple, but what if you could change the look
without replacing the piece itself?

That is the idea behind ORIN’s
interchangeable earrings. Each Core is a complete stud to wear on its own; an
Expression adds a new silhouette when you want something different. Choose a
piece you love now, with room for your style to evolve.
